Can you be specific? What kind of treatment are you talking about? |

I was on an assignment once where I was treated very poorly. The regular staff nurses were very resentful and wouldn't even talk to me most of the time. One of the nurses actually made up lies about me in an attempt to make my life very miserable while I was there. Fortunately, I am thick skinned enough that it didn't get to me. I have to admit though, I was very unhappy on that assignment. The one saving grace was the nursing supervisor who was more than kind. She even invited me to various activities outside the workplace. That particular assignment was in a small town in Oklahoma. I've never been treated poorly at a large hospital. |

It sounds like Hayward was pretty bad, but I think I can add another NO GO to site, and that is Henderson NV, it has to be the most disorganized ER in the country .. besides being lied to about my week-ends off (I worked 10 out of 13) I was stuck with "hold patients " nearly every night. I too woud NOT recommend Nightengale Nurses, My so called recruter called me after a 2 week silence and asked me if I had found anything...........I said I thought that was what he was supposed to be doing... neadless to say Nightengale is out with me |

I've been doing this off and on for years and it's gotten worse. Inthe 80's and early 90's we wre atill appreciated in mot places. With the increasing shortage and high burn out rate, I've found that a quite different class of nurse in hospitals now. Less sophisticated, less knowledgeble, more prone to pettiness. This applies even more to management. It's scary and even dangerous.
Stay away from- Sutter Coast- Crescent City Ca. 1 great and 1 insane charge nurse. Manager in ozone. None of the day travel nures talked to each other. A drab crappy little dunghole.
Bellflower, California- liked my buudy Sandy. DON is nuts. Cna's 1 to 15 patients, no supplies, not even a coffee maker. Management obviously incompetent or don't give a crap, A danger zone.
Rhousand Oaks, Ca STAY AWAY FROM HCA HOSPITALS!
A beautiful area, a hospital that looks great with internal craziness.
Yuma Regional Medical Center-Men-stay away. Mybe ok for women, Again-managers are on another planet.
Desert Hospital, Palm Srings Ca -A beautiful place- management nuts.
Hope this helps and good luck!!!! PS- stay away from Absolute Nursing! |

The worst travel assignment I have had was at Madera Community in central Ca. The hold situation was horrendous where you had to switch to medical floor paperwork after the admit order was given and the patient was determined to be a hold. We would have as many holds as we had er beds. And that would include direct admits! You would care for your er patients in the hall. If I hadn't been under contract and a bit scarce on money I would have quit the second week.
The docs were incompetent at best.
The staff though, was great. |

Gregg, I need to ask you why I should stay away from Absolute? I am just about to sign up for my first travelling job that was offered to me at St. Luke's in Phoenix. I've been trying to get my foot in the travel door for the past cpl of years since I got back into nursing.
Please let me know why you don't like Absolute, and I would love to discuss it with you. I am not closing the 'deal' until Tuesday I really WANT to take the job, but I don't want to do anything stupid, either.
Thanks.

I have travelled for 16 years: I like Aureus Medical, Clinical One, Star Med (now Intelistaff so don't know how they are now), Cross Country Trav Corp was OK. Depends a lot on your recruiter. Each company has pros and cons. Question for Gregg101-What was the problem at Yuma-what dept did you work in?I did seasonal last year and returning this year -loved it. Would like to hear your side of it. Yes I definitely agree things are getting worse-more resentment, nastiness, crazy management- Signs of the times-overall insanity. Hang in there. We do make a difference to our patients. Don't allow these people to pull you in and become like them!! |

I have a news flash for travellers. YOU ARE NOT REGULAR STAFF at the hospitals you travel to. You should not expect to be welcomed with open arms as you come and go like the wind. Another news flash, the majority of you lack experience and expertise. We have to watch you very closely. Also, as an RN in Seattle I make $42-46 per hour as a regular staff RN (without overtime) with excellent benefits and an excellent PENSION. My mortgage on a $450,000 home is $1343 per month. My home appreciates $4,100 per month. This scenario is very standard for a PERMANENT staff RN in Seattle. When you travel, you will ultimately lose for the quick fast cash. Unfortunately, for you the 90s are over and you are NOT making better $$ than the permanent staff in Seattle nor do you get the employye benefits or the very lucrative benifits of home ownership. I won't even mention the generous sick leave, vacation and bonuses we receive. If you are considering travelling, it would behoove you to check out the benefits of regular staff. Also, approximately half the travellers ( of which there are few) sign on to this hospital and others in the area. |

Greg101 I am curious as to what you meant by this "STAY AWAY FROM HCA HOSPITALS! " Was it a particular HCA hospital or all HCA hospitals. Did you hear about HCA being sold? I work at a HCA facility in Georgia and we have not been told anything about the sale. I read it in the newspaper. I was just curious |

Wow!! Alleyalley can you say BITTER and ANGRY!!! As a permenent staff member and now a traveller I can say that from both sides I see what you're saying, but what's wrong with treating someone like a fellow professional and helper because you're short staffed and not like they have the plague? Helping them find supplies, at least saying Hi? I've known travellers like you describe but I've also known permanent staffers worse than these. Not all travellers are in it for bigger $$$ or to escape problems they are hiding. Some just need a break from the politics of being a permanent staff member or are just trying to see the country. As you so pointedly brought up, yours is not the only way to do things.
By the way, did you notice you were in the travellers forum before you posted on the last two topics? What could a permanent staff RN that is so happy as such be looking for here? Just curious.
Take it easy on each other, we're all nurses.....period! |

Allyally534 I am really curious to know more about where you are working. What kind of patient ratio do you have? Do you work 7P-7A or 7A-7P? You said your benefits are excellent, do you have prescription drug coverage, what types of co-pays do you have. I have never worked as a traveler before and really do not plan on doing so. I believe the way to make a work environment the best it can be is to have a nursing staff that is there for the long haul, not until their contract is up. I am really looking forward to your response.
Cheers |
