KidsHealth.org - Premature infants, known as preemies, come into the world earlier than full-
term infants. Prematurity occurs when a pregnancy lasts fewer than 37 weeks;
full-term infants are born 38 to 42 weeks after they are conceived. Age in
premature babies is often defined in postconceptional weeks (the number of
weeks after the baby was conceived) until the baby is 40 weeks old, which is
the average age of a full-term baby.
