I am going to be graduating nursing school in May 2007 Very Happy. I really want to be a labor and delivery nurse eventually. Is there any specialized training or classes I need to prepare me for this.

Hello,

While I dont have L&D experience I have a friend who is a new grad and entered directly into this area.

I am not sure how the hospitals are where you live, but many hospitals offer preceptorships in specialty areas. You would be trained for several months and generally would be offered a night shift position. Once you become experienced, and positions on other shifts open, you could apply for them.

The hospital that I worked for recommended at least 1 year of med-surg experience before they would accept a new nurse.

I actually interviewed for a position in L&D. I decided against it as I was petrified by the amount of liability involved and the OB doctors were mostly NOT NICE.

My friend loves it though she's still on nights. She works three 12 hour shifts.

Look into the teaching hospitals or "Magnet" hospitals in your area, if there are any. They generally have preceptorships. Start going to job fairs, contacting recruiters, and speaking with your instructors for advice.

GOOD LUCK!!
